History Of Lakewood On Parade
Lakewood on Parade was founded in 1976 by a group of Lakewood business owners and city staff as a Centennial-Bi-Centennial celebration.
The first event took place on July 3rd & 4th near the Federal Center, with a parade along Kipling Street and a festival at Lakewood Park. However, those dates conflicted with another Jefferson County Centennial-Bi-Centennial event at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.
So in 1977, the date was changed to the Labor Day weekend. When the Festival of Mountain and Plain debuted in downtown Denver on Labor Day weekend, the date was again changed to the weekend before Labor Day.
In 1994, the event moved to Colfax Avenue and Carr Street for one year to celebrate Lakewood’s 25th birthday, then back to Lakewood Park from 1995-2000.
2001 brought another location-- the new Lakewood City Hall had been constructed and the Belmar Center was being built. So Alameda Avenue became the parade route and Belmar Park was the festival location. For three years (2005-2007), the parade wound its way through the Belmar Center.
In 2008, the event was canceled for the first time in its history. The Lakewood Police Department provides security for our event, unfortunately the weekend of our event they were needed to provide additional security for the Democratic National Convention which was being held in downtown Denver.
In 2009, Lakewood on Parade moved back to its roots to celebrate Lakewood’s 40th birthday at the Jefferson County Schools Stadium on Kipling Parkway with family fun, food, and fireworks!
We organize an annual festival dedicated to a specific theme, for the enlightenment and entertainment of Lakewood's citizens by producing and presenting art, music, dance and/or theater, and entertainment embrasing charitable, educational, civic, patriotic and cultural ideals. We want it to be a community celebration that promotes appreciation of the arts, social interaction and serve to showcase Lakewood businesses, organizations and attractions.
Our event is organized and staffed completely by non-paid volunteers who desire to be actively involved in the celebration. The board of directors make up the FIRSTeam. These individuals meet multiple times per month to plan, organize and conduct the event. We also enlist the aid of individual volunteers for event day staffing. The local Civial Air Patrol provides young men and women to assist in our parking lot. We also have volunteers on event day from several local service organizations including the Kiwansis Club of Belmar who staffs our beer garden.
Lakewood On Parade is not affiliated with the City of Lakewood. However the city has contributed funding to our event since it's inception and provides police protection and human resources from the Community Park Resources Deparment. We could not hold our event without thier support. We fund our celebrations through business and individual sponsorships, participant fees, community donations, and/or grants. Lakewood On Parade rents the Jefferson County Sports Stadium at the standard market rate. We pay for all West Metro Fire protection sevices the day of the event to provide emergency aid to our vistiors. We fully fund the fireworks display that caps off the evening.
Any proceeds after operating costs goes to fund scholarships for deserving Lakewood students for either higher education or vocational schooling. Lakewood On Parade, Inc. is a 501 (c)3 corporation and all contributions are tax deductible.
Lakewood On Parade Alumni
Lakewood on Parade could never have been possible without the people who have stepped forward and volunteered thier time, effort and in many cases financial support, year after year. The amount of time required to plan, organize and host the event required ongoing personal sacrifice from everyone involved, and many of the people listed below have served this event for over 10, 20 and in some cases 30 years! We want to both thank and honor all of our Lakewood on Parade Alumni who have over the years made this event possible.
